Yes, my car is an R1! The only real way to tell is the dual oil coolers up front.

Kinda harsh, but at least you aren't afraid to voice your opinion. I can appreciate the work that goes into the swap, but it does defeat the purpose of owning the FD and completely f@!ks the weight balance of the car. But that's ok if your going in a straight line.

Actually it doesn't. The LS1 only weighs about 70 lbs more than the 13B IIRC, maybe not even that much. My buddy did the swap and that thing drives great still. He still goes with us on backroad spirited drives and it's awesome. I've driven it a couple times and hope to do the swap to another FD someday. I won't do it to my current FD because I'd feel like I was turning my back on the rotary and that will NEVER happen, but I hope to get a rolling chassis and put in an LS1.

I was driving down the highway and went to pass someone in 6th gear at around 2-3k RPMs, I didn't even have to downshift...just put my foot in it and moved.

The LS1 is be no means a downgrade in technology. That engine is sick. It's ok to love rotarys cuz I do too but there's more to the world than that. I think it was Huzer who said it best "Rotarys are by no means the zenith of engines."

Well... First off a rotary has very few main moving parts where as a simple piston engine has like thirty times that. Which everyone knows the fewer parts the less things that can go wrong. Secondly, a rotary engine basically moves in one continuous direction where a pistons engine changing directions at a very rapid pace which causes a ton of vibration which only leads to more things going wrong. Plus a rotor spins at like a third of the output shaft. which as everyone knows the rotor is the main part and moves way slower than pistons which will again make it more reliable. And that probably doesn't make much sense to anyone on here but i dont really care rotary engines are just too cool for school.

If i were to go for a piston powered car i would get a 240z and put a L28et. which is a 2.8 turbo out of a 82 280zx which is way cooler than any v8 and will spank the crap out of most of them. and they're really cheap and easy to find. so =P

I won't argue that the LS1 is a great engine or not, because it is. Period. But, it weighs in at 434 lbs installed. I can pick up my 13b by myself, with a flywheel on it, that's how I got it on the engine stand before throwing it in the car. So I'm going to venture to say it's a lot less the 300 lbs. Add in the alternator and carbs plus and oil filter and it might weigh in near 300, maybe, but I doubt it. My best guess is 200 lbs, but I did not put it on a scale. The LS1 block bare weighs 170 with no parts. Plus you all forgot to factor in reciprocating mass. That has more effect than static weight will. Ask any motorcylce mechanic or racer. Laurel brings upp a valid point, three moving parts and no valve train. But comparing the LS-1 boinger to a rotary is apples to oranges. I love winging mine to 9500 RPM, and i love the way it pulls like it's boosted above 5500. On the other hand, the raw, sexy torque of an american V8 is another animal all together. I am not a fan of V8 swaps in FDs because the rotary is part of the sex appeal of the car. But I understand the accomplishment of making the swap. So I guess I would just have to say it comes down to performance per dollar and in that catagory, the rotary wins hands down. I paid $3000 shipped to have my engine rebuilt and ported. It's a stage 4 from Rotary Warehouse and I am more than pleased wirth the performance. It was built so I can turbo or bottle it in the future. I had a 69 camaro 13 years ago with a 330 hp 327 that engine cost 5K to build, and that was just machining and parts. If I had paid for that engine it would have been 10K. I have a total of 7k in my RX-7 including buying the car.

Now don't get me wrong, cuz it seems like you think I'm saying the LS1 is better which is far from what I'm saying, I'm saying the LS1 is not a horrible engine. And you mean to tell me you figured out how a rotary worked all on your own? I'd rather not spend time typing out why an LS1 is good cuz someone's already said it better. Now I wouldn't do a FD swap either but it from a mechanical perspective that is beautiful. Rotaries have their place just like pistons have their place. If I was drag racing I'd take the V8 but for autocross I'd take a 13b. Not to say V8s can't compete in autocross. If you watch the SCCA E Production series there's a Trans Am, IIRC, that's holding it's own against mostly rotaries. I think the basic point I'm trying to make is there is no perfect engine and every engine has its place unless it came out of a Honduh :P

There is nothing wrong with a V8 I love my V8s. I would not put one in an RX-7 but I do appreciate the work it takes. My galaxie's 390 is not a HP motor only about 330 but it has over 450 ft/lb. I love the way when you hit the gas the drivers side of the front end lifts about 6". And I love setting off car alarms and drowning out Harley's with the deep rumble.

My RX-7 is by far the most fun car I have. It is like going the a go-kart track every time I step in the car. I would never want to make it into a muscle car and loose that.

Peter Farrel Racing can take your R1 and make it 800hp on pump gas if you give them about 30k. But with over the counter stuff 300 to 350 is not especially difficult. They were 265 stock.

I could tell you guys all the parts I've bought for my FD since I've been in the desert, haha. I think I've spent about $4k or so on parts since I've been here, haha. It might even be more than that actually. And I have to rebuild the engine and put all that on before I come out there. I have two weeks off when I get back to rebuild the car and then get the house ready to sell in the 3 weeks after that before I leave. Ugh.

Oh, and the FD had 255hp 217lb/ft stock, and there have been guys on RX7 club get 400hp with a good (Steve Kan) tune on stock turbos. Not sure what else they had done though.

Ya. They're boosted from the factory that's why. People have made 400 in the 8. I now for a fact that there are 2 kits that can get the 8 up to 340 hp and turn the boost up and an ignition upgrade later you can make 390 easy.
